Understanding UUID Versions
A Universally Unique Identifier (UUID) is a 128-bit label used for records in computing systems. Standardized by RFC 4122 and RFC 9562, UUIDs eliminate the need for a central coordinating registration system, letting independent systems generate IDs with virtually zero risk of collisions.
While UUIDv4 is created from pseudo-random numbers (providing maximum unpredictability), UUIDv7 encodes a millisecond Unix timestamp within the first 48 bits. This makes UUIDv7 naturally sortable in ascending chronological order, preventing heavy database index fragmentation in systems like PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MongoDB.
